Our Explorer Unit

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are Three Explorer Scout Units in Colchester North District.

Explorer Scouts get the chance to work with others in the District, not just their Unit. By doing this, they will get the chance to do many more activities, not just the ones their Unit organises.

Our Scouts feed into one of the local Explorer Scout Units With the support, direction and guidance of Unit leaders, Explorer Scouts are encouraged to lead themselves, design their own programme and work towards the top awards that Scouting offers. With exciting prospects like being a part of camps and expeditions both home and abroad; adventurous activities such as mountaineering, parascending and off shore sailing; Explorers offers fun and adventure for all.

The Explorer Scout programme offers a balanced range of activities covering the outdoors & adventure, skills, physical recreation, community, global, and values & relationships. To support the programme there are a range of badges and awards for the Explorer Scout: the Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond Awards; the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards; and the Explorer Belt; An important part of the programme are the expeditions that Explorer Scouts need to complete to gain their Chief Scout Award.

Explorers also have the opportunity to be a part of The Young Leaders’ Scheme which develops their leadership skills and sense of responsibility, by helping to run meetings for younger sections.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
